The hair life cycle
The average lifespan of a hair is 1 to 6 years, it goes through a 3-step cycle, during the end of which the hair falls. It first spends a large part of its time growing for several years - this is called the anagen phase-, then begins to stagnate for about 3 weeks (catagen phase), finally dying and being expelled for a final phase (telogen) - this can last up to six to seven months. Then a new hair follicle starts growing in its place to start a new cycle. See visual aid below:
We lose on average between 50 and 100 hairs per day which will each be replaced. When this phenomenon accelerates, increases or no longer works properly, there is a small problem or you are getting old, sorry! This is called alopecia, the final phase of which is baldness.
Sidenote: If the loss of a small amount (between 50 and 100 hairs) of hair every day is a natural process, significant falls should however worry us because they could be the indication of medical condition. So, a visit to your doctor might be necessary. |
So What Causes Hair Loss?
Abnormally heavy hair loss could be the symptom of various health conditions in the body. First of all, the problem could be related to the scalp itself: a fungal infection, psoriasis or dermatitis prevents the follicles from retaining the hair.
Hair loss could also be due to iron deficiency: to learn this you can just go for a quick blood test.
Blood tests will also help determine if your thyroid is functioning properly, as hypothyroidism is also another cause of hair loss.
Can Hair loss be a hormonal problem?
Other causes can explain hair loss, such as pregnancy. Indeed, during the months following childbirth, a woman may lose much more hair than usual. This phenomenon is explained by a hormonal change. Fortunately, everything normally returns to normal after 6 to 12 months.
Chronic stress can also induce hair loss, so try to be in a more relaxed state of mind to help with your hair regrowth. Finally, certain medications and treatments, the most known of which is chemotherapy, can cause hair loss.
So, after you determine your cause of your hair loss and start working on regrowing your hair, there are so many shampoos out there that can stimulate hair growth and can help treat your scalp. Here’s a list we put together for you:
