Mastopexy, more commonly referred to as a Breast Lift, is a surgical operation designed to make the breasts look better. It is for breasts that are often the right size but not in an esthetically pleasing shape to the woman. Mastopexy, uses the patient’s own breast tissue to reshape and lift droopy, sagging breasts that have lost elasticity. During a mastopexy your surgeon will remove from the skin in fashion that supports the breast in the right place and pushes it up. The incisions are usually made around the areola and in the fold under the breast.
A breast lift can often be performed together with a breast augmentation if it’s suitable and the patient wishes to enhance the size of the breast. The procedure stays pretty much the same as explained above, except the insertion of an implant as an extra step. This is usually the case for patients with very small breasts to begin with, and that have drooped lower than they wish due to breastfeeding or other factors.
The patient is expected to spend at least one night at the hospital for close monitoring. Immediately after the surgery the patient will notice an overcorrection, that is the breasts sit too high up on the chest. This is normal as there will be a slight drop in the following weeks which will bring it to the desired results. Most patients need about a week to ten days off from work. Two weeks after the surgery you will feel well, very mild discomfort and you can resume your physical activities. However, it is advised to wait about four to six weeks before going back to more intense activities.
