What is Gynecomastia (Enlarged Male Breasts)?
Gynecomastia surgery – also known as male breast reduction surgery – is a cosmetic surgery that aims to remove the excess fat and glandular tissue around male breasts to give it a flatter more muscular masculine looking chest. Gynecomastia surgery is the only known effective treatment for enlarged male breasts.
Is Gynecomastia Surgery Right for You?
Gynecomastia can occur in men for various reasons like hormone imbalance, some medications or drugs or it can even be genetic. Gynecomastia can also be a good option for men who have gone through dramatic weight loss that resulted in saggy skin around the chest.
However, gynecomastia surgery is not right for everyone. It is not right for men who simply have large breasts from excess fat and being overweight.
Gynecomastia surgery usually lasts about one hour and half and can be performed with liposuction. Cosmetic surgeons would make an incision around the nipple to suck out the excess fat and glandular tissue, or completely relocate it if there is a lot of tissue to remove. It can be performed either under local or general anesthesia and usually requires an overnight stay at the hospital.
Recovery
In the few weeks following the surgery, patients usually experience soreness in the breasts and may have scars around the nipple (and under the armpit) which could take a few weeks up to several months to heal depending on the person’s healing speed.
In addition, the patient is required to wear a compression garment to be worn day and night for several weeks. It helps shape the final results of the operation.
Generally, surgeons advise patients to avoid exercise, weight lifting or any strenuous activities for up to six weeks after the procedure. However, always make sure you check with your doctor to get individual advice about yourself because each body heals at a different pace.
