Is Hair Transplant Permanent?

Is Hair Transplant Permanent?

Hair transplant procedure, simply put, is the process of taking healthy hairs from a donor area in one’s body (most commonly the back of the scalp), and implanting it where there is hair loss thinning, or baldness. Hair transplants can be performed on men as well as on women and can be transplanted on areas that did not have hair previously, such as naturally large foreheads.

There are two main methods of performing hair transplants:

FUE: Also known as Follicular Unit Extraction is a method by which hair follicles are individually extracted, using a small 0.5mm punch from the donor area (usually the back of the scalp) and implanted into the receiving area- the area which is bald or thinning. FUE is a preferred method for patients as it requires very minimal downtime and yields a satisfying number of hair grafts. Some recent methods within FUE include Direct Hair Implantations (DHI) Sapphire and Robotic Hair Transplant.

FUT:  Follicular Unit Transplant (or the strip method) is the older of the two hair transplant methods. It consists of surgically removing a strip of skin tissue from the donor area in the back of the scalp, the follicles are then cut out and prepped to be inserted in the ‘recipient area’ i.e. the balding or thin area of hair. This method is getting less and less popular with time seeing as it leaves a scar in the donor area due to the sutures made there after the removal of the skin tissue.

Is Hair Transplant Permanent?

Yes! In normal cases hair transplant is permanent. The hair follicles that are harvested from the donor area in the back of the scalp are the most powerful hairs in our heads. If you notice most men who suffer from Androgenetic Alopecia (in men most commonly referred to as Male Pattern Baldness), you would notice that there is hair loss on the front and the top of the scalp but there are always some hairs left on the lower back of the scalp. Those hairs are most resistant to DHT - dihydrotestosterone- which is the hormone that causes hair loss. These same DHT-resistant hairs generally are the donor area for hair transplant. Therefore, when transplanted in a bald or thin area they keep their same qualities and never fall throughout your life.

Is it worth getting a hair transplant?

For most people, the answer to this would be a definite yes. The results are natural because it is your own hair that is used and more importantly they are permanent. The operation is relatively safe, performed under local anesthesia and the patient can bounce back to normal life within two or three days. In addition, the cost of the operation, especially in some countries is very reasonable.

Are hair transplants safe?

Hair transplants, if performed by a competent medical team in a sterile and modern place, is quite a safe procedure. There are very few side effects and most of which are quite rare. The most important thing is to follow the instructions of your physicians and make sure that you will have a proper follow-up after the operation in case you needed that.
